Do you know that the kitchen is such a powerful place in the house? It is not just a place where we cook, it is a training ground where we mould children into responsible adults.
That is why we started KidsCook Showdown to show that the kitchen is indeed the ultimate classroom where children from 5 years old can learn responsibility and leadership.
Research shows that over 75% of children aged 6 – 8 miss out on building essential life skills such as cooking. We can close this gap and reduce the negative side effects we see all around us.
You may wonder why we need to start this early. The truth is that 90% of a child’s brain starts to develop by age 5, when they start learning, thinking, and solving problems.
Mind you, having a child start learning how to cook from age 5 is not about mastery or perfection…
It is about building confidence.
It is about learning creativity.
It is about having a responsibility mindset
As a parent, your role is powerful in leading the way. Here are some tips to start the process;
1. Be a Coach
Imagine yourself as the coach of your favourite football team. Your job is to teach, show them how to, follow through, spot loopholes and address them by providing detailed guidance.
2. Invite them into the kitchen daily
Have a cooking routine for your child. You can develop a food timetable and assign cooking responsibility. Task ownership builds confidence.
3. Celebrate little effort
Teach them with warmth by appreciating their little efforts of progress.
4. Cook together
Make cooking a shared experience, not a one-time event. Let them be involved in cooking their school meals and family meals.
Remember, Proverbs 22:6 encourages us to train up a child in the way he/she should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
